Equine Services

KUVTH also comprises the Equine Medical Center (EMC), which is one of the few medical facilities dedicated to the care of horses across the southern and central islands of Japan. The EMC offers a wide range of treatment procedures, and is equipped with a surgical suite encompassing treatment space, an X-ray room, padded induction and recovery rooms, a surgical preparation room, a surgical room, and a sterilization/sanitation room. The EMC is at the heart of the equine practice (both off-campus and on-campus) we provide while giving our students (from the second semester of fifth year to the first semester of sixth year), hands-on training.

Off-campus visits

The EMC offers off-campus visits through the use of the faculty’s dedicated mobile units. In our off-campus visits, we can thus use a digital X-ray system (able to check X-rays in the field), an ultrasound diagnostic system, endoscopes (for the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts), electrocardiography, oral examination equipment, and offer care and treatment. As a rule, we offer off-campus visits on Mondays and Thursdays; however, please contact us in advance to schedule an appointment.

Equine Hospital Service

The EMC performs standing surgeries (for castration, treating wounds, etc.), procedures under general anesthesia (e.g., arthroscopy, laparotomy, and fracture repair), and a variety of other examinations, treatments, and hospital treatments.
